Praxis, 2017

Porcelain, wax, brass

Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or realized. It may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing, or practicing ideas.

Meaning-making in artistic practice is active and performed with the materials. This is a realisation I arrived at when considering displaying this piece, and by reviewing photographic documentation of the process. If the significant meaning-making actions of practice are lost when the finished piece is shown, the meaning suffers.

I tried to rescue the action by recreating it in the piece. In this instance, the brass plate recreates my action of transferring a calendar grid to the convex surface of the porcelain sphere.
